So it is going to be a pretty soccer filled summer. The World Cup is not the only touch I am getting from the largest and greatest game on earth. The team I fielded for indoor soccer in the winter has merged with an outdoor team in the SJMS League here in Jersey.
Mantua United, a rag tag team of players from all ages and skill levels took to the field for the first time as a whole last Sunday. Yours truly put on a horrible display of soccer skills as my moves and body were very rusty from lack of regular play. I was not the only one it seemed, and it looked as if my fellow teammates were in the same boat as me.
As the game progressed so did our improvement, by the second half of the game I was still uneasy but feeling more comfortable with the game. It was proof positive that there is a huge difference between trained and untrained. It is tough to contribute to a team when your uneasy with your own skills and performance. Confidence comes with the knowledge that you can handle the task at hand and confidence was something I was lacking in abundance on Sunday.
Feeling as though I needed major improvement to my athletic play I drew up a training regiment that should help me to revive the abilities I had when I was 22 and played at this level. I do not think it will take much to get conditioned again I just have to live, think, and eat it until I am at a satisfactory level of play.
It helps that the World Cup is in session because it brings inspiration and motivation. I just wish some of the fields we play on were as nice as those in the tournament.
